Could this actually happen? Meet Political Dystopian author T.T. Michael

Today I would like to introduce T.T. Michael the author of  Fire War a Dystopian Political Thriller series. Set in the not so distant future, 2070’s, these books deal with terrorism, political intrigue, loyalty, ethics, freedom and so much more!

Fire War 09

So, take it away T.T. Michael

me

Who are you and what do you do?

I am a finance manager for a Toyota dealer in Illinois. I am also the writer of the Fire War Trilogy. 3 books that use today’s issues but it is set in the not too distant future.

What is your book about?

Fire War shows a future that could very well happen if we let it. What would you give up for total security? In my books the USA, Canada, and Mexico join together to make the United Continental States of America or U.C.S.A. They shut down the borders and bring all troops back to let the rest of the world fend for themselves.

Why did you choose to write your book?

I’ve heard so many people suggest we build a wall between USA and Mexico so I took it a little further than that. I wrote it because I wanted to show a “Be careful what you wish for.” Scenario.

Who or what was the inspiration behind it?

My inspiration is our world today. The people, the governments, and all the terrorist attacks lately.

What kind of research did you?

I didn’t need to do research because really this is 100% fiction. (I hope so anyway). I just watch the world and see what’s happening.

What was the biggest challenge in writing the book?

Time. I work a lot of hours sometimes as much as 60-70 hours a week and to find time to write one book was challenging enough but I wrote 3 inside one year. I was that passionate about this story!

What was the best part of writing your book?

I loved watching the story unfold. I started out with outlines but by the time I was done with the first chapters the story took on a life of its own and practically wrote itself.

What, if anything, have you learned from writing your book?

I learned a lot about people and what they think about current events. I’ve had a lot of people tell me that they see this future as a real possibility and they’re scared!

Do you have any advice to give authors who wish to self-publish?

Write what you love. Write it for you because if you write for an audience you’ll never find one. If you write what you think and what you love, you’ll always be successful.

Do you have a favourite author? If so, what is it about their work that you like?

I love the Harry Potter books and the Hunger Games books. Those books created their own worlds that the main characters lived in. I would like to think that I did the same with my main character.

What are your future writing plans?

I am currently writing a TV treatment for the Fire War books. I’ve gotten interest from a producer in Hollywood that wants to make this a TV show and we are currently working together on putting that into motion.

How should I publish my middle-grade novel?

I finished writing my middle-grade action adventure novel set in London and Duat – the land of the dead in ancient Egyptian religion. The title so far is Cleo Dalby and the curse of the Chaos Mummies. It had several other titles, but this one seems to suit the tone and genre of the book.

anubis_balance

It has been beta tested, edited quite a bit. Beta read again, edited again and again and again… I think it is ready to be let out into the big, wide world.

So, what do I next?

Should I try traditional publishing, agent etc? Or, should I self-publish?

I know the pros and cons of both kinds of publishing having been published by a small publishing house and self-published. Both have their good points and bad. I have heard that it is very difficult to sell children’s or middle-grade books if you self-publish. I don’t know how true that is, but I have heard it said by quite a few authors.

Now that I am a self-published author, I like it. I have control over all aspects of marketing and editorial decisions. A thing I did not have when under contract. I am inclined towards self-publishing this book for those reasons.

However, I may just send it out to a few well-chosen agents that have enough authority and respect within the publishing world, to possibly get me signed to a major publishing house. Why? Because I am unsure of how my book will sell. Most books written for children under the age of fourteen are bought by parents for their children. After speaking to a lot of parents, they said they hardly ever, if ever, bought a book by a self-published author. This may not be true of every adult who buys books for young people.

Am I talking myself into traditional publishing here?

I’m somewhat confused.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions, and advice would be gratefully received.

I have posted an extract from the book.

No cover as yet. This will have to do.

Cleo Dalby and the Curse of the Chaos Mummies

If you were twelve-years-old and possessed by evil, what would you do?

Curses, chaos, mummies, gods and the fight to save mankind.

Chapter 1

We Are Not Alone

Darkness pushed against Cleo Dalby’s arms and legs as she struggled to make her way through the narrow chamber. Hands outstretched before her, she slid her feet forward, straining to hear something, anything. But every sound, even the skid-slap of her sandals on the stone floor, became lost in the gloom. On Cleo walked slow and tentative, deeper into the world of corpses.

A sigh, long and weary-filled drifted towards her. It seemed to gather friends as it neared, and soon the sad laments of dozens of disembodied voices surrounded her. The moans continued, drifting in and out of her ears like tired moths trapped inside a lampshade. She tried to struggle on, but the wails tugged at her ankles, forcing her to stop and listen to the muffled chatter that swirled and scuttled inside her head.

“We, the dead, abide here. Quietly resting, hands on chest, faces tilted up to catch a ray of sunlight.”

“A futile gesture. For this far below the ground, there is only blackness and the weight of stone.”

“We, the dead, lie still, poised in readiness for our resurrection.”

“What a wait we’ve had. So many years spent lying in a state of half-remembered promises and expectations, grown dull with the passing of each century.”

“We, the dead, no longer know who we are. Memories fade and melt into our hollow skulls.”

“We, the dead, sometimes whisper to each other.”

“Husks of words from dried up lips that stick to the cold walls, waiting for the living to listen.”

Cleo touched the limestone with her fingertips and thought she heard a murmuring of souls.

“We, the dead, can feel a presence.”

A breath of ancient brushed past her cheek. She shivered and rubbed her naked arms. The chill slapped onto her legs and spread upwards leaving pimples of stiff-haired unease on her sunburnt flesh. She gulped and said into the blackness, “Hello? Is anyone there? My name is Cleo.”

“Found out!”

“Not Yet.”

“No.”

The voices ceased.

She called again, but no answer came. There was a smell of rot so strong that Cleo nearly vomited. It disappeared and she felt as if a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She stood tall, shrugged, and said, “The dark is just an absence of light,” then shook the torch that was gripped in her hand. “Stupid, froggin’ thing. Work.” She patted it against her palm. “Work.” Something touched her shoulder and Cleo jumped.

Writing Tips From Neil Gaiman

I’ve just finished writing a middle-grade action adventure book, working title – Revenge upon the Mummy Snatcher – yes, I know, not a great title.

2012-09-18 at 10-05-20 (1)Anyway, I gave it to a number of Beta readers and have had some really constructive feedback. However, sometimes, one or two readers went beyond the requirements of pointing out flaws in character, plot, dialogue etc, and sent me full-on editing with occasional re-writes they have done themselves.

Whilst I appreciate their effort and thank them profusely, it left me in a quandary, because they have given me completely opposite views/pointers on my work, leaving me somewhat confused.

My head was in such a whirl that I almost gave up on the novel until I came across Neil Gaiman’s 8 rules of writing. Number 5 resonated with me immediately, as did number 8.

https://www.brainpickings.org/2012/09/28/neil-gaiman-8-rules-of-writing/

Thank you, Neil Gaiman, you have rescued my befuddled brain and set me back on course with my book.

Just need a better title.

Here are the first 500 words  from Revenge upon the Mummy Snatcher:

Chapter 1: We Are Not Alone

Darkness pushed against Cleo Dalby’s arms and legs as she struggled to make her way through the narrow chamber. Hands outstretched before her, she slid her feet forward, straining to hear something, anything. But every sound, even the skid-slap of her sandals on the stone floor, became lost in the gloom. “I thought I’d lost you.”

“Mum, don’t creep up on me like that.”

“I can’t very well do anything else, can I? It’s darker than a black hole in here.”

“I know. I can’t see a froggin’ thing.”

“What do you expect? We are half way down a pyramid. And don’t say ‘froggin’ I know what it really means.”

Cleo mouthed the word again, and then once more, just because she could.

New Release – Changeling Fog – A Novelette from The Song of Forgetfulness series.

I have a new release. Changeling Fog – the novelette.

Fog_novelette_crop1

It was just a short story. A free download when someone bought Changeling Fog, book 1 in The Song of Forgetfulness Dystopian/Sci-fi/Fantasy adventure series.

It is an introduction to the post-apocalyptic world of Adara and her troubled life in Cityplace. We learn more about the plight of this future world, meet some the mysterious inhabitants and get a glimpse of the supernatural in the eerie, scary Carnieval show that reveals just how devious and cruel the Agros really are.

Then I began to tinker with it, you know introduce some new aspect of the heroine’s character via action scenes. Before I knew it, the short story became a novelette. That’s when I realised it could be used as part of my overall marketing strategy to gather a list of reader subscribers.

So, I am offering a pretty good deal.

If you buy Changeling Fog at only $0.99 and £0.99 you can get a copy of Whisper Gatherers absolutely FREE!!!

WhisperS8front cover only

Is that a good marketing ploy?

I hope so. Anyway, it’s worth a try, I guess.

Here it is then – Changeling Fog.

Fog_novelette_crop1

The Carnieval horror show hits town.

Cannibal renegades – Carnies – have entered the quiet confines of Cityplace. With them comes a clinging fog that turns the gentle occupants into savage beasts.

In the future the world is ravaged by famine and disease, almost all animal life is extinct, people are starving and living in fear of the cruel Agros that rule NotSoGreatBritAlbion. Yet there is a haven amongst the desperate, scattered population – Cityplace – a closed community of peaceful folk, living a germ-free, worry-free existence.

Within this sanitised metropolis, lives a seventeen-year-old girl who is different – a girl with a special power. She is Adara – Catcher of birds.

Want a FREE YA Dystopian Sci-Fi Action Adventure E-book?

I recently acquired the rights back for my Young Adult, Dystopian, Science Fiction, Action Adventure series – The Song of Forgetfulness.

author banner for FB event

Two of the books in the series, Echoes from the Lost Ones and A Silence Heard, had been published by an Indie publisher, but when they closed down in June of this year, I decided to self-publish them with new covers and re-edited. I also had a Prequel – Whisper Gatherers – that I’d wanted to publish for a while. So I was sad, yet happy when my publishers closed their books.

I am not great at self promotion, in fact I’m hopeless, so I enrolled on a book marketing course to learn how to sell myself and my books.  It’s going slowly so far, but I am attempting to put into practice what I have learned.

I am giving away the Prequel to hopefully attract readers to my book series. I am getting some really great 5* reviews too!

Whisper Gatherers is  FREE to download from Amazon from 20th-21st August.

Still not sure?

Well, why not read this extract from Changeling Fog and decide for yourself.

Changeling Fog

The air became more natural the further away I sneaked from Puritytowers. My nostrils twitched as smells of rot replaced the artificial floral scents that were perpetually pumped around Cityplace. Despite my tum flip-flopping with nerves, I continued on towards the outskirts of my home. A part of me wanted to venture further, out beyond the perimeter fence and into the Wilderness where Carnies and Praisebees wandered. Where Woodsfolk dwelt deep inside the forest, and the elusive Ladies had their hidden dwellings. But, I would not dare go to a place so wild and fraught with danger. Wolfies also abided there. Nope, my trip to this forbidden outer-city location was adventure enough.

The light changed too. From a glaring radiance to a sinister, gloomy glow. Now, I was used to brightness everywhere, both inside, from the many round lanterns recessed in the walls and ceilings of our abodes, to the always switched on street lamps and towering info boards that lit up the sky so much, that we never really saw the moon and stars, unless we dared to wander away from the security of Cityplace Central. Like I was doing now. I peered ahead and saw the dark enclosure I needed to get to.

As I walked towards it, the gas tubes that were stuck in the ground to illuminate the path to the perimeter fence, dwindled until there were no more. I was left with nowt but the setting sun to guide me on. The ground changed from a smooth and even stone walkway to a cracked and gravelly trail devoid of any familiar landmark buildings. All became a bleak and empty area I did not want to be in.

To rid myself of the feel of lonely, I turned my head and gazed at the dazzling concrete structures of Centralplaza in the distance. How small it appeared to be. It looked like a vid I’d seen in history class. Teach had shown us a reconstruction drama of when NotSoGreatBritAlbion was not mostly under water, and was populated with many more folk than it is now. When trees grew in cities and animals still lived in the wild, and in people’s homes as playthings and companions. When birdies landed on the ground and let folk feed them without the fear that they would be snatched and gobbled up; since they are now the only animal-type thing left in this sorry land. Except for Wolfies, but they don’t count, they are too ferocious and mean to be caught. Poor birdybirds, doomed to live in the tops of trees and in constant fear of being ate. Just as well no one knows about my gift. Although I am not so good at calling the birdies down as yet, I am getting better, and one day soon, I will be able to sing and make the birdies come to me.

There were lots of birdybirds in the classroom vid. Pigons I think they were called. They were everywhere, plopping and flapping and making a “Hoohoo-hoohoo,” sound. But that was not the main thrust of this playacting vid. This drama was about some kind of ceremony thingy, a coronation, or something. It showed a fem sitting inside a strange wooden box that was perched on big wheels being pulled by massive horsles all dressed up with ribbons and feather plumes. She wore twinkly clothes and a tiara, and was sitting next to a manlyman, her hub, and both were waving to more folk than I could ever imagine even existing in all of this puny land, never mind just in the place called Lundon.

Teach said she was the Queen of Hingland and ruled the land until she was one hundred and twelve years old. Then her grandbub took over, and apparently, things started getting worse. Now, I’m not saying that this new and last king was to blame for the plagues, famine and diseases that began to sweep the nation and beyond, but like I said, it began when he took over.

Still all that was so long ago, who can say what is fact or fiction.

Meet Fantasy Author Jane Dougherty

Prior to the Facebook Extravaganza – Fantasy Sci-Fi Dystopian Steampunk Bargain Books Party I am spotlighting each author taking part. Today I would like you to have a look at the very talented Fantasy author Jane Dougherty. I am familiar with her work and can vouch for the fact that she is a brilliant writer. Dark Citadel is an excellent read by the way.

Welcome, Jane Dougherty!! IMGP4852 3Jane Dougherty writes various kinds of fiction but finds it very hard not to include at least an element of fantasy. Her self-published trilogy, The Green Woman is straight up no nonsense fantasy. The retellings of some of the great love stories from Irish myth, she co-authored with Ali Isaac, are in that hazy, magical domain between historical fact and flight of poetic fantasy. Wormholes, her new YA series, starts off as gritty, realistic Armageddon, but rapidly takes off into pseudo-science fantasy inspired by some of the more trippy writings of the Apocrypha. The first volume is to be published by Finch Books this autumn. Jane is also a prolific writer of short fiction and poetry, some of which has been published in anthologies, literary journals, and webzines. To read some of her poems or download a short story, visit her blog at: https://janedougherty.wordpress.com/ For official purposes she gives Bordeaux as place of residence, but most of the important stuff goes on inside her head.

Amon is destined for a military career, but convinced of the innocence of his prisoner, he begins to question the laws and values of his city. To hang onto power the Protector determines  to destroy the Green Woman’s allies within Providence by lighting the sacrificial fires of Moloch. When the flames have burned out not one will be left. As the flames of evil leap and dance in Providence, Hera and Amon resolve to defy the Protector, with courage as their only weapon.

Beyond the Realm of Night – The Green Woman Book Three

BTRON cover for Amazon

At the end was darkness. Now it is time to go back to the beginning and rekindle the light. Deborah, the daughter of the Green Woman, reaches her journey’s end only to find it has barely started. Escaping Providence was the easy part. Now, as her mother’s strength fails, the burden of the Memory passes to Deborah. The Garden is waking, the Iron Horde is massing, the Queen’s host is gathering. The Fianna have sailed the western ocean and Providence is alight. But evil has put down strong roots in the hearts of the citizens of Providence and Deborah fears she has not the power to tear it out. If she cannot summon up the green earth magic of the tree, Abaddon and his Iron Horde will trample the new shoots of the Garden. For Abaddon has the power of death with him. The weapons to defeat him are life and love, but Deborah longs to join the shadowlands, and her love is dead. This is the final volume of The Green Woman series, in which the broken pattern will be mended and the balance of good and evil restored. Or not.

Midnight Visitors

MidnightRays

This short story is set in the world of The Green Woman. It follows naturally from the second volume of the series, The Subtle Fiend, but can be read as a stand alone story. When Aisha learns the identity of her betrothed, something unheard of happens—her parents try to prevent the marriage. But in a city bounded by a crystal Hemisphere, where no rebellion is tolerated and every gesture is monitored, where can Aisha hide? Adam, her brother, believes the rumours of a resistance movement, the followers of the Green Woman, but to put his sister in their hands, first he has to make contact, and the Pure Ones have so much more practice at rooting out clandestine activity than he does. The Green Woman is moving, but so is the evil generated by the the Elders of Providence. Many stories will end in tragedy before the fate of the world is settled.
